Melasma Treatment

It is a skin disorder that manifests itself in the form of brown spots which appear afterwards on the areas that are exposed to the sun.

Treatment Method

Melasma treatment is a process that takes a long time, requires patience from both the patient and the physician. Ut should be noted that in this process there may be new attacks, especially in the summer months.

The location of the blemish is important in the treatment of melasma. Treatment can sometimes completely remove the blemishes in people with fair skin, although there is a possibility of recurrence. People with dark skin are less likely to be completely cured and blemishes are more likely to recur. People with light-skin can see results within weeks, while dark-skinned people may require months of treatment.

Sun protection is the most important aspect of the treatment. In addition, one or more blemish creams (hydroquinone, tretinoin and corticosteroid combination, azelaic acid, kojic acid-containing products), chemical peels, laser treatments that are suitable for your skin and blemishes may be recommended by your physician.

Your dermatologist will recommend the suitable treatment for you.

What are the causes of melasma?

Even though the actual cause of melasma is unknown, it occurs when the cells called melanocytes, which give color to the skin, produce excessive amounts of melanin (the substance that gives color to the skin). Causes of formation are:

  1. Familial predisposition
  2. Sun (Ultraviolet) Rays
  3. Pregnancy
  4. Use of birth control pills. Melasma is more common in those taking birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy. Hormones make the color cells work more.
  5. Cosmetic products such as some make-up items, cologne, perfumes, soaps, and moisturizers may also cause such blemishes, especially after exposure to the sun.
